Matthew Matete is a Kenyan photographer and film director whose work uses the lens as a portal into the emotional and cultural depth of his homeland. Based in Nairobi, his practice has evolved over more than seven years into a distinct visual language rooted in introspection, intimacy, and storytelling.

His work is driven by a deep commitment to authenticity. Matthew approaches photography as an emotional archive—one that captures the layered realities of Kenyan life beyond surface-level narratives. Through his images, he explores themes of identity, vulnerability, and human connection, often centering the quiet, unspoken moments that define personal and collective experience.

As a visual artist, Matthew is intentional about representation. He challenges reductive portrayals of African identity by creating work that celebrates individuality, resilience, and emotional depth. His images invite viewers to reconsider what they see and feel, offering a perspective that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

At the core of his practice is a belief that imperfection holds beauty. Matthew’s work seeks to reframe human flaws not as limitations, but as defining elements of truth and character—encouraging audiences to embrace vulnerability as a powerful and necessary part of being human.
